1. Warm-Up / Activation (16 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Physical
Activity Coach G is doing this session.
Coaching Focus Prepare players physically and mentally for individual defending. Emphasize readiness, movement quality, and body control before moving into the 1v1 theme.
What You Want to See Athletic stance, active feet, engagement, and players getting into a competitive mindset early.

2. Main Activity – Shadow Dribbling (20 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Physical
Numbers: 1v1
Area: 20+ yards
Intervention: Freeze & Correct
Activity Players dribble against a partner from line to line while the defender shadows the dribbler. Alternate roles. After a couple of minutes, switch partners. Start with a lot of distance between attacker and defender, then make it tighter. Rinse and repeat.
Problems to Solve Attackers often go too slowly or too predictably. Encourage them to attack both the left and right side and force the defender to react. Get them to “dance for you.”
Challenge Maintain balance and control of both body and movement. Stay goal side and avoid diving in.
Coaching Points
  • Stay balanced
  • Defend with patience
  • Keep a low center of gravity
  • Adjust feet instead of lunging
  • Stay goal side
Coach’s Eye Watch if the defender can match the attacker’s movement without crossing feet, losing balance, or opening the wrong side.

3. Progression – Faster Pressure (10 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Physical
Numbers: 5v5
Area: Same, shorter
Intervention: Drive-by Coaching
Progression Details Use smaller groups and create more intense, faster dribbles directly toward the opponent. Players switch roles quickly and repeat often.
Condition Fast movement and a low center of gravity.
Coaching Focus Examine technical execution under more pressure and at a more realistic speed.
Coaching Points
  • Quick feet
  • Close down under control
  • Don’t overcommit
  • Stay compact and ready to react
What to Watch For Can the defender adjust when the attacker speeds up? Do players stay low and controlled, or do they get upright and flat-footed?

4. Water Break (2 min)

Purpose Quick recovery and reset before the competitive defending phase of the session.

5. Scrimmage / Conditioned Game – 1v1 Defending Tournament (28 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Tactical
Numbers: 1v1 defending, 4 teams
Area: 20 yards
Intervention: Drive-by Coaching
Game Setup + Conditions Set up two goals and organize a defending competition. One player attacks and one player defends. Defenders focus on stopping the opponent from getting a shot. Rotate and switch roles every 5 minutes. Keep score. Most goals wins. Play ten-minute games, then switch teams.
Scoring Only the attacking team can score.
What Are You Watching For? Can the defender prevent the opponent from shooting?
Coaching Points
  • Delay the attacker
  • Protect the direct path to goal
  • Stay goal side
  • Be patient and disciplined
  • Compete with intensity
Coach’s Eye This is a good moment to evaluate who naturally enjoys defending, who competes well, and who can stay calm under pressure.

6. Small-Sided Competition – Winner Stays On (20 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Tactical
Focus: Physical
Focus: Psychological
Numbers: 7v7v7
Area: Half field
Intervention: Drive-by Coaching
Activity / Variation Scrimmage format. One goal wins. Winner stays on.
Purpose Transfer individual defending habits into a more chaotic and realistic game environment.
What to Watch For Are the players still applying 1v1 defending principles when the game becomes more open and competitive?
Psychological Focus
  • Competitive mentality
  • Resilience after mistakes
  • Communication
  • Willingness to defend
Coach’s Eye See who carries the session learning into live play and who needs reminders once the pressure of the game takes over.

7. Full Scrimmage (14 min)

Environment: Outdoor
Focus: Technical
Focus: Tactical
Focus: Physical
Focus: Psychological
Numbers: 11v11
Intervention: Drive-by Coaching
Activity / Variation Full scrimmage.
Main Purpose Give players a chance to apply everything from the session in a realistic game context.
What You’re Looking For Are players staying goal side, defending patiently, delaying attackers, and preventing shots in the flow of the game?
Coaching Points
  • Transfer learning from the activity into the game
  • Compete in duels
  • Recover quickly after being beaten
  • Communicate and support teammates
Coach’s Eye Look for the defenders who can repeat good habits even when they are tired or under real pressure.
